A pungent odor led to a swift response from the Marion County Fire Rescue’s Special Operations HAZMAT team Monday afternoon after a gas leak was reported in the 14000 block of SE 90th Terrace in Summerfield.
The call came in at 1:24 p.m., on Monday, January 13, with the 911 caller describing a strong gas smell outside a residence. Firefighters from Spruce Creek Station #30 arrived within minutes, confirming the odor and promptly evacuating a nearby home while blocking traffic to secure the area.
The Special Operations HAZMAT team arrived at 1:48 p.m., locating the source of the leak: a 250-gallon steel tank with an active fuel release. Technicians took action, removing all fuel from the compromised tank to eliminate the hazard.
By the end of the operation, the scene was declared safe with no reported injuries.
