Marion County has installed a Safe Haven Baby Box at the EMS Central station in Ocala. The box provides a safe and anonymous way for parents to surrender newborns, featuring temperature controls and an alert system to notify first responders immediately, ensuring the infant’s care.

The Safe Haven Baby Box initiative is part of a broader effort under Florida’s Safe Haven Law, which allows parents to surrender infants up to seven days old at designated locations without legal repercussions. Marion County plans to expand this program with installations at Citra Fire Station #20 and the remodeled Golden Ocala Station #20 later this year.

The Safe Haven Baby Box organization reports over 9,000 calls to its national hotline, assisting parents in every state. According to its website, the program has referred more than 500 women to crisis pregnancy centers, helped with 10 adoption referrals, and facilitated over 150 legal Safe Haven surrenders. These numbers highlight the reach and impact of this growing initiative.

The dedication of Marion County’s first box underscores the community’s commitment to providing resources for parents in crisis while protecting the welfare of newborns. With additional locations planned, the county is extending access to a vital service designed to save lives and offer support during challenging times.
