Hit-and-Run Suspect Hands Over Mexico ID instead of Driver’s License

A Marion County deputy’s Sunday traffic stop turned into a chase after the driver decided running on foot was better than handing over a license he didn’t have.

According to arrest reports, Corporal E. Serrano clocked a gold Toyota doing 63 mph in a 55 zone along West Highway 40 just after midnight. When the driver, identified as 46-year-old Gonzalo Jimenez Robles of Ocala, was asked for his license, he instead produced a Mexico ID card. Once told a computer check would be run, deputies say Robles bolted on foot southbound toward a fence but was caught before he could make the leap.

A quick records search revealed the reason for the sprint: Robles has never held a valid driver’s license and had an outstanding warrant dating back to 2023 for leaving the scene of a crash and driving without a license.

He was booked into the Marion County Jail on fresh charges of driving without a license and resisting without violence, in addition to the old hit-and-run warrant. Bond was set at $1,000 on the warrant and $2,000 on the new charges.

From speeding 8 mph over to running straight into a jail cell, deputies say Robles’ Sunday morning drive went downhill fast.
