A man was arrested Sunday afternoon after deputies say he sped through Ocklawaha at more than double the speed limit, crashed into several trees, and then fled on foot before being captured by a K9 unit.
According to the Marion County Sheriff’s Office, Corporal Ryan Weaver clocked a red SUV driven by 23-year-old Joseph Jaques Nathaniel Hamilton at 107 mph in a 40-mph zone near Fisher Road and Malauka Lane Drive around 1:12 p.m. When a deputy on a marked motorcycle activated his lights and siren, Hamilton allegedly refused to stop, losing control while turning and crashing into a tree line.
Deputies said Hamilton then ran from the wreck, leaving behind a passenger, but was later tracked down and bitten by a K9 during his arrest.
After being treated for his injuries, Hamilton admitted he fled because he had two outstanding felony warrants — one for robbery in Alachua County and another for fleeing and eluding in Citrus County. Deputies also learned he did not have a valid driver’s license.
Hamilton faces multiple charges, including fleeing to elude law enforcement, leaving the scene of a crash with property damage, resisting an officer without violence, driving without a valid license, and dangerous excessive speeding. He was booked into the Marion County Jail with no bond.
