Child Pronounced Dead in Citra; Homicide Investigation Underway

A female child was pronounced dead Thursday after deputies responded to a home in Citra, and authorities are investigating the case as a homicide, officials said.

Marion County Sheriff’s Office deputies were dispatched around noon to the 16500 block of Northeast 44th Avenue to assist Marion County Fire Rescue with an unresponsive child, according to the sheriff’s office.

The child was taken by medics to a local hospital, where she was later pronounced dead.

Deputies were told at the scene that a man at the property had harmed the child, authorities said. Major Crimes detectives are investigating the death as a homicide.

A suspect is in custody and being questioned, the sheriff’s office said.

Officials said additional information will be released as it becomes available.
