Man Accused of Roadside Attack on 72-Year-Old Driver, 86-Year-Old Passenger

A Dunnellon man is facing multiple felony charges after deputies say he attacked two elderly victims during an early morning disturbance along Southwest 93rd Lane Road.

According to an arrest affidavit from the Marion County Sheriff’s Office, deputies responded around 6:30 a.m. on March 31 to reports of a disturbance in the area of the 19800 block of SW 93rd Lane Road. When a deputy arrived, he observed Robbie Steven Mikolaj standing in the roadway holding what was later identified as a damaged Ohio license plate and keys belonging to the victim’s vehicle.

Deputies say the incident began when a woman driving a rented 2024 Dodge Voyager slowed down after seeing Mikolaj standing in the road. As she attempted to go around him, Mikolaj allegedly stepped in front of the vehicle, forcing her to stop.

According to the affidavit, when the driver lowered her window to check on him, Mikolaj allegedly reached into the vehicle and attacked her, causing cuts to her hand and injuries to her arm. Her 86-year-old stepfather, who was in the passenger seat, got out of the vehicle to intervene and was then struck in the face, deputies said.

The affidavit states the man attempted to call 911, but Mikolaj allegedly took the phone and threw it into a nearby yard, damaging it. Deputies say Mikolaj then went to the rear of the vehicle and ripped off the license plate, causing additional damage.

Both victims told deputies they did not know Mikolaj prior to the incident.

After being read his rights, Mikolaj reportedly told deputies that the victims had “a power grid on my whole house” and claimed the vehicle they were driving was “fake.” He also stated he struck the male victim because he believed the victims were attacking him.

Deputies reported that Mikolaj did not appear to have any visible injuries.

He was arrested and transported to the Marion County Jail without further incident.

Mikolaj is charged with burglary with assault or battery on a person 65 or older, battery on a person 65 or older, tampering with a victim or witness, two counts of criminal mischief, and petit theft. Jail records show he is being held without bond.
