To the Editor,
I owe the Marion County School Board an apology. Previously, I criticized the plan to spend millions replacing Belleview Elementary at the exact same location, combine two schools into one giant campus and dump even more traffic onto a miserable stretch of Highway 484.
Turns out I was giving the plan too much credit. It gets worse.
The new consolidated Belleview Elementary is being designed for 950 students. That sounds impressive until somebody commits the reckless act of looking up how many students are actually enrolled in the two schools we’re “consolidating.”
According to the latest complete federal enrollment data available from the National Center for Education Statistics, Belleview Elementary had 681 students in 2024-25. Belleview-Santos had 663. I’ll save the School Board the trouble of finding a calculator. That’s 1,344 students.
We’re building a 950-student school to consolidate two schools that recently enrolled 1,344 children. Ladies and gentlemen, we have apparently discovered the first school in Marion County that may need rezoning for overcrowding before the paint dries.
Now, obviously, the district can redraw attendance boundaries. In fact, it will have to. Some children currently attending these schools presumably won’t attend the new consolidated campus. But doesn’t that raise an obvious question? What exactly are we accomplishing?
We’re spending tens of millions of dollars, temporarily relocating an entire school, demolishing much of the existing campus and combining two longtime community schools. This is only to build a replacement that couldn’t hold their recent combined enrollment in the first place.
Apparently the development motto around here is “Build it and they will come,” while the school planning motto is “Build it and hopefully they won’t.”
Then there’s the location.
Highway 484 in front of Belleview Elementary is already a mess during arrival and dismissal. You don’t have to take my word for it. The school’s own parent information describes front-gate pickup as “often very hectic.”
So naturally, this is where we’re putting the mega-school. Brilliant.
More buses. More employees. More parents. More cars. One consolidated campus. Same Highway 484.
Belleview absolutely needs a new elementary school. That’s never been the argument.
The question is why, in one of the fastest-changing parts of Marion County, we’re spending this kind of money to solve yesterday’s problem instead of tomorrow’s.
Why not build a genuinely new school on a new site, keep educational capacity distributed throughout the community and plan for the thousands of people still coming?
Instead, we’re putting two eggs in one basket, putting the basket beside Highway 484 and making sure the basket isn’t too big.
