Deadly DUI: Ocala Driver Faces Manslaughter After Fatal Wreck

A devastating three-vehicle collision at the intersection of N Pine Ave and NW 20th St has resulted in one fatality and the critical injury of another individual.

The incident occurred on June 12 at approximately 7:45 p.m., drawing a swift response from the Ocala Police Department.According to authorities, the crash involved a northbound Honda Civic and Toyota Scion, alongside a southbound Chevy Spark. As the Chevy Spark, driven by 44-year-old Tiara Kirkland, attempted to make a left turn onto NW 20th St, it crossed into the paths of the Honda and Toyota. While the Honda Civic managed to avoid a collision, the Toyota Scion was unable to do so, striking the Chevy Spark.

The impact caused the Toyota Scion to rotate violently, hitting the raised median on NW 20th St. The vehicle then overturned multiple times, ultimately crashing into three parked cars in a nearby parking lot. Tragically, the passenger of the Toyota was ejected from the vehicle and pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the Toyota suffered critical injuries and was rushed to a local hospital. Both the Honda driver and Kirkland, the driver of the Chevy, were uninjured and refused medical attention.

Upon arrival, officers noted signs of impairment in Kirkland, who subsequently failed multiple field sobriety tests. Breathalyzer tests indicated blood alcohol levels of .191 and .186, more than twice the legal limit. Kirkland was arrested for DUI manslaughter and taken to the Marion County Jail. Blood samples were also collected for further analysis. The Ocala Police Department’s Traffic Homicide Investigator, Joedicke, is leading the investigation. Preliminary reports suggest that the speeds of the Honda and Toyota may have contributed to the severity of the crash.

The Ocala Police Department extends its deepest condolences to the families and friends affected by this tragic incident and continues to urge drivers to prioritize safety and responsibility on the roads.
