Stumble and Snooze: Deputies Nab Nodding Driver with Syringe in Lap

A Stumbling Start, a Passed-Out Finish: Marion County’s Latest Bust

Marion County deputies Santana and Mead had their hands full Tuesday evening with a driver who seemed to be channeling a toddler learning to walk. Keith Smith was spotted at the intersection of Cherry Road and Baseline Road, performing an Olympic-level routine of stumbling, falling, and somehow managing to get into his vehicle and drive off.

The joyride was short-lived as Smith soon pulled over, taking an unscheduled nap behind the wheel. Deputies found him passed out cold, a syringe resting in his lap like a misguided bedtime companion. Their investigation confirmed what his stumbling hinted at: Smith was under the influence of narcotics. A quick search of his vehicle turned up multiple prescription pills in plastic baggies, adding to the evidence pile.

Smith’s night of stumbling ended with a definitive crash into reality as he was arrested and taken on a one-way trip to the Marion County Jail, all thanks to the keen eyes and swift actions of Deputies Santana and Mead.
