Lottery Dreams and RV Schemes: Belleview Man Takes High-Speed Joyride
In a twist of fate that sounds more like a comedy skit than a crime report, Marion County Sheriff’s deputies nabbed a man who claimed he “won the lottery” after stealing an RV and taking it for a high-speed spin.
On the sunny morning of July 9, 2024, Marion County deputies were called to 5865 SE 140th St in Summerfield, Florida, after Carol Herr reported her RV had just been stolen. The unknown culprit didn’t just drive off – he fled at breakneck speed, leaving a trail of confusion and a broken gate in his wake.
Enter Deputy Trainee Sasser and Deputy Gray, who were already in the area. Before receiving the call about the stolen vehicle, Deputy Sasser spotted an RV matching the description barreling down SE 140th Street. Moments later, he found the RV parked on the side of the road with a man, later identified as Daniel Johnson, nonchalantly wrapping a power cord attached to the back of the vehicle.
When confronted, Johnson confidently told deputies he got the RV because he “won the lottery.” Unfortunately for Johnson, his jackpot dreams quickly turned into handcuffs and a ride to the Marion County Jail.
Herr, still shaking from the ordeal, recounted seeing her RV speed down her long driveway, smashing through her locked metal gate, and leaving a trail of fresh tire marks. Approximately $250 worth of damage was done to the gate, and a large plastic piece from the RV lay abandoned at the scene.
A quick computer query revealed that Johnson’s driver’s license had been suspended indefinitely multiple times, making his joyride even more illegal. He was promptly issued a traffic citation for driving with a suspended license and booked into the Marion County Jail without further incident.
