High-Speed Hijinks: Ocala Man’s Daring Escape Ends with Crash and a Foot Chase

In a series of late-night maneuvers that could have rivaled a Hollywood car chase, Marion County Sheriff’s deputies had their hands full when they attempted to pull over Jamal Jacobs, 36, in Ocala late Sunday night. It all began around 11 p.m. when Deputy M. Qubaisy spotted Jacobs in a gray sedan speeding down NW 16th Avenue, heading toward a construction zone with dark-tinted windows that surely wouldn’t pass a safety inspection.

Once the deputy made a U-turn, Jacobs reportedly took off, weaving through Ocala’s northwest streets and blowing past stop signs with the reckless abandon of someone with places to be and a long list of rules to break. When Deputy Qubaisy activated his lights and siren, Jacobs opted for a high-speed tour through local roads, hitting 90 mph in a 35 mph zone and running red lights as he flew past bewildered onlookers.

The chase came to a crashing halt at a local business on N. Pine Avenue, where Jacobs reportedly lost control, veered into oncoming lanes, and collided with a parked vehicle. But he wasn’t done yet. Displaying a move not commonly seen outside action movies, Jacobs flung open the driver’s door while the car was still rolling, tumbled onto the ground, and took off on foot. An innocent passenger, apparently just along for the ride, was left to process the night’s events from the passenger seat of the now-stationary sedan.

The escape attempt was short-lived. After hurdling a fence into private property and attempting to vault another, Jacobs was apprehended. A quick search revealed only his Florida ID card in his pocket, a fitting accessory for a man already on thin legal ice. When questioned, Jacobs reportedly nodded in silent confirmation that his motivation to flee stemmed from a lack of a valid driver’s license — a predicament complicated by multiple suspensions, the latest for an unpaid court fee.

To top it off, the car wasn’t registered either, sealing an eventful evening for all involved. Jacobs now faces a handful of criminal charges, including fleeing with disregard for public safety, resisting without violence, driving without a license, and operating an unregistered vehicle. After a brief stop at AdventHealth Ocala for medical clearance, he was booked into the Marion County Jail with a stack of citations for his trouble.
