Modelo to Go: Man Arrested for DUI with Beer in Passenger Seat

Erratic Driving Leads to DUI Arrest in Marion County

Marion County deputies had their hands full Friday evening after numerous 911 calls reported a white pickup truck driving erratically near SW 63rd Street and SW 63rd Lane Road. The suspect, identified as 36-year-old Carlos Hernandez Urbina, was found parked nearby with his engine running, a Modelo in the cupholder, and a case of beers riding shotgun.

Deputy S. Cantrell arrived on the scene to find Hernandez Urbina stepping out of the truck, keys in hand. The strong smell of alcohol, bloodshot eyes, and slurred speech immediately raised suspicions. When asked how much he’d had to drink, the defendant reportedly admitted to consuming “4-6 beers” after a quick trip to a local 7-Eleven.

Field sobriety exercises were conducted, but Hernandez Urbina’s performance was less than stellar. During the walk-and-turn test, he wobbled, stepped offline, and started early—a common pitfall for both dance floors and DUI stops. He also struggled with the one-leg stand and finger-to-nose tests, leaving deputies unconvinced of his ability to drive safely.

In a curious twist, Hernandez Urbina switched to speaking only Spanish during the exercises, though he had been conversing in English moments before. Deputy Abreu stepped in as a translator, but the language shift didn’t improve his results.

The defendant was ultimately arrested and taken to the Marion County Jail, where he refused to provide a breath sample. He now faces a DUI charge, adding to the list of examples of why drinking and driving don’t mix—especially with a Modelo riding shotgun.
