Health Officials Warn of Algae at Lake Weir

Steer Clear: Blue-Green Algae Alert Issued for Lake Weir

The Florida Department of Health in Marion County (DOH-Marion) is urging residents and visitors to avoid Lake Weir’s Hope Boat Ramp and Hampton Beach after detecting the presence of blue-green algae on Feb. 19. Water sample testing is underway, but officials warn that the algae can produce toxins, making it a risky dip for both humans and animals.

For those unfamiliar, blue-green algae isn’t just an eyesore—it’s a bacteria that can turn Florida’s waterways into a no-go zone. Blooms can look like scum, foam, or even paint swirling on the surface, often giving off an unmistakable stench. And while the situation at Lake Weir is still under review, environmental conditions can change quickly, meaning caution is key.

Officials advise against drinking, swimming, or even wading in the affected waters. Boiling won’t remove potential toxins, and neither will wishful thinking—so leave the cooking and dishwashing out of it too. Pet owners should also take heed: what’s bad for humans is bad for animals.

On the upside, if you’re dead set on fishing, fillets from healthy fish are still considered safe—just be sure to rinse them with clean water, ditch the guts, and cook thoroughly. But shellfish? That’s a hard pass.

To track algae bloom updates, visit the Protecting Florida Together website or check the DEP Algal Bloom Dashboard. Concerns about exposure can be reported to the Florida Poison Information Center at 800-222-1222.

For now, consider Lake Weir’s greenish tint a red flag—and maybe opt for dry land activities instead.
