We Who Care of Marion County will host its first “Reelin’ in the Good Times” Annual Fishing Derby for individuals with special needs on April 25, 2026, at Lake Lillian Park. Registration is open to all individuals with speical needs. The idea for the derby originated with Zachary Kardell and Cohen Moreno, who pitched the We Who Care board after recognizing a lack of fishing events tailored for individuals with special needs. The event will raise funds to support programs that help persons with disabilities build connections, independence, and opportunities within the community. Organizers say the derby will focus on inclusion, fun, and friendly competition, while giving participants the chance to enjoy a day of fishing.
The nonprofit is currently seeking sponsors and community donations to help fund prizes, refreshments, fishing equipment, and event activities. Sponsorship levels range from $250 to $1,000, with businesses receiving recognition on event materials, banners, and during the opening and awards ceremonies.
Organizers are also accepting community donations, including raffle prizes, gift certificates, food, fishing gear, and other items.
