Marion County Public Schools appears to be looking to fill bus driver seats quickly, sending out an automated district-wide email around 6 p.m. Monday reminding residents that interviews begin less than 24 hours later.
The district’s Transportation Department announced a series of open interviews for prospective school bus drivers, with the first session scheduled for Tuesday, May 19, from 9 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Another round of interviews is planned for Thursday, May 21, from 1 p.m. to 3:30 p.m.
The interviews will take place at the MCPS Transportation Department Main Compound, located at 5470 N.W. Gainesville Road in Ocala.
Applicants are “encouraged” to bring a five-year motor vehicle report from the Department of Motor Vehicles, a request that may send some scrambling after the notice landed Monday evening ahead of Tuesday morning interviews. MCPS stated computers will be available on-site for anyone needing to complete an application.
According to the district, the position includes paid training, flexible scheduling, holidays and summers off, free single-coverage healthcare benefits, and starting pay of $19.50 per hour.
The district described the openings as an opportunity for residents interested in “a rewarding career supporting our students.”
