A 29-year-old Ocala man was killed Wednesday morning after being struck by a vehicle along County Road 200A, and authorities say the driver returned to the scene about an hour later.
According to the Florida Highway Patrol, the crash happened at approximately 8:05 a.m. Sept. 9 as a silver Ford Explorer traveled north on County Road 200A approaching NE 110th Street.
The pedestrian was walking along the east shoulder of the roadway when the Explorer traveled off the road to the right and struck him with the front-right portion of the vehicle.
The pedestrian was pronounced dead at the scene.
FHP said the driver did not stop following the crash and left the area.
Approximately one hour later, the driver returned to the scene in the damaged Explorer and admitted to troopers that he had been driving the vehicle and had left after the crash.
The driver was identified as Matthew Boardman, 29, of Marion County.
Boardman was charged with leaving the scene of a crash involving death, a violation of Florida Statute 316.027(2), and will be booked into the Marion County Jail, according to FHP.
The victim’s next of kin has been notified. His name was not released in the information provided by FHP.
