A 61-year-old Marion County man is facing a felony charge after deputies say he struck a woman in the head with a drinking glass during an argument, leaving her with a severe laceration and requiring emergency medical treatment.
According to a Marion County Sheriff’s Office arrest affidavit, Randal Ray Adkins was arrested Saturday, October 10, and charged with aggravated battery causing great bodily harm in connection with the domestic disturbance.
Deputies responded to a camper residence after the victim contacted her daughter, reporting that Adkins had struck her in the head and that she was bleeding heavily.
The daughter, who lives in Michigan, contacted emergency services after learning of the incident.
When deputies arrived, they found the victim bleeding from her head, with blood covering her neck and chest. Investigators also observed broken glass and blood scattered across the camper floor.
According to the affidavit, the victim told deputies she and Adkins had been arguing about his drinking when he began squeezing a glass in his hand until it partially shattered. She alleged he then threw the remaining glass at her, striking the side of her head.
The victim suffered a laceration several inches long and was transported to the emergency room for treatment.
Adkins reportedly acknowledged arguing with the woman and breaking the glass but denied throwing anything at her or making physical contact with her.
Investigators determined that the accounts were consistent until the point of the victim’s injury, which Adkins could not explain.
The arrest report also revealed that Adkins had previously been arrested in September 2021 for aggravated battery with a deadly weapon involving the same victim. He was convicted in May 2022 and served three years in the Florida Department of Corrections.
The responding deputy noted that law enforcement had been called to the camper several times previously for domestic disturbances.
Following the arrest, the victim’s daughter told investigators that her mother felt trapped in the relationship and feared Adkins would eventually kill her. She also alleged that attempts to keep him away had been unsuccessful because the victim repeatedly allowed him to return.
Adkins was taken into custody and transported to the Marion County Jail without incident. The arrest affidavit lists no bond.
