Letter: Why Supporting Ukraine Matters

I am submitting a response to the article submitted by A Proudly Underfunded US Citizen, subject: Hurricanes Hit USA Hard While We Keep Writing Checks to Other Countries. The author laments our providing arms and funds to Ukraine.

This is an isolationist view which is reminiscent of this countries attitude prior to World War 2. That view cause unnecessary lost of life and freedom to our French allies. Japan and Germany saw us as weak and indecisive which led us to being attacked and ultimately being involved in a global conflict.

There are reasons to aid Ukraine besides stopping the spread of communism, and the violent annexation of the former member states of the USSR. There are strategic reasons for helping Ukraine preserve its independence and providing it arms to preserve its freedom and borders.

Putin is a megalomaniac who wishes to return mother Russia to its former communist glory and prestige. Russia wants their natural gas pipeline, its vast quantities of coal, iron ore, titanium, and untapped lithium (which essential for batteries).

Putin considers Ukraine as a “little Russia”. I would remind the author that many NATO countries have stepped, and provided arms from their reserves to Ukraine and have increased their production of 155mm artillery shells which are essential Ukraine’s defense. An international brigade has also formed which consists of volunteers from several countries who have stepped up to defend the Ukraine people.

Sincerely,

David G. Ownby
