Letter: Hurricane Wrecked Your Town? No Worries, Ukraine’s Got Your Share

Dear Editor,

I was thrilled to learn that the United States has once again demonstrated its unwavering commitment to global causes by sending over $113 billion in foreign aid to Ukraine since 2022, with $61.8 billion dedicated to defense alone. What’s a few more billion among friends, right? Meanwhile, our good old American Red Cross has found itself having to ask regular working-class citizens to chip in for those pesky little hurricane disasters back at home, which just tore through parts of North Carolina, Tennessee, and Florida.

The destruction from Helene has been catastrophic. In North Carolina alone, at least 98 people have died, with hundreds missing and entire towns submerged under water. The storm has left over 4.5 million people without power and has caused damages estimated to run into the billions. But don’t worry, the ordinary, caring citizens in the United States will dig deep in their pockets to pick up the pieces, because our elected officials are busy making sure foreign nations, like the Ukraine and many others, have everything they need.

Let’s not forget, Americans are struggling with inflation at home. Prices for food, gas, and basic necessities keep climbing, leaving many families wondering how to make ends meet. But hey, we’ve got priorities! After all, foreign aid makes us look generous on the world stage—who needs infrastructure when you can bankroll a war halfway across the globe?

So, instead of getting bogged down in the mundane details of rebuilding our own hurricane-ravaged communities, why don’t we all dig deep, skip that extra cup of coffee, and send our spare change to help those suffering in the heart of the Carolinas? I mean, if our leaders can spend $113 billion overseas, surely $50 from each of us poor people at home will get the job done in the states.

America – where our leaders are so generous, they help everyone else before our own disaster-ridden communities.

Sincerely,

A Proudly Underfunded U.S. Citizen
