Marion County Steps Up Pedestrian and Cyclist Safety with High Visibility Enforcement
If you’re zipping along South U.S. Highway 441 or cruising SE Maricamp Road, you might notice more deputies than usual keeping a close eye on things—and for good reason. With an uptick in crashes involving pedestrians and bicyclists, the Marion County Sheriff’s Office (MCSO) is rolling out High Visibility Enforcement Details (HVE) through May 9, 2025. The goal? Protect the county’s most vulnerable road users before they become another grim statistic.
HVE operations, backed by a partnership between the University of North Florida and the Florida Department of Transportation, will focus on two traffic hotspots known for accidents:
- S US Hwy 441 (SE 173rd Street to SE Hwy 42)
- SE Maricamp Road (Oak Road to SE 88th Street)
Traffic deputies will be part enforcer, part educator, reminding drivers, bicyclists, and pedestrians about the rules of the road. While the focus is on public education, don’t think you’re off the hook—violations could still net you a warning or even a citation.
The MCSO is also offering a quick refresher for anyone feeling rusty about road safety:
- Drivers: Stick to the speed limit, don’t drive impaired, and keep an eye out for pedestrians and cyclists.
- Bicyclists: Follow traffic laws, ride with the flow of traffic, and light up at night.
- Pedestrians: Use crosswalks, obey signals, and make yourself visible after dark.
With safety on everyone’s radar, the MCSO hopes this initiative will save lives and make Marion County’s roads a little less dangerous for everyone.
