Holiday Spirits: Ocala Man Fails Sobriety Tests, Claims Only had a Taste

Ocala Man Makes Dubious Pit Stop at Fire Station 16 During DUI Arrest

An Ocala man might want to rethink his holiday travels after turning a routine traffic stop into a multi-charge affair at Marion County Fire Rescue Station 16 on December 19.

Deputy M. Larson of the Marion County Sheriff’s Office reported observing a grey Nissan nearly collide with his patrol car at the intersection of Southeast 80th Street and Southeast Magnolia Avenue. After executing an evasive maneuver, Deputy Larson initiated a traffic stop, catching up with the swerving vehicle outside the fire station.

The driver, identified as Michael Knight, wasted no time escalating the situation. He admitted he didn’t have a valid driver’s license and attempted to downplay his sobriety with the classic “I only had a sip” defense. Despite this claim, the open beer can—clumsily hidden under a towel on the passenger-side floorboard—along with slurred speech and bloodshot eyes, told a different story.

Field sobriety tests didn’t go much better for Knight. His performance included using his arms for balance, missing heel-to-toe steps, swaying like a Christmas tree in a hurricane, and failing to follow instructions during an alphabet recital. In a particularly festive twist, he couldn’t even manage the “finger-to-nose” exercise—a task reminiscent of party games, albeit less cheerful in this context.

Knight was charged with Driving Under the Influence, Driving While License Suspended, and Refusal to Submit to DUI Testing. While he may have avoided a crash with Deputy Larson, his decision-making swerved off course in spectacular fashion.
