‘Hillbilly’ Showdown: Silver Springs Man Fights Deputies

Silver Springs Man Arrested After Alleged “Hillbilly” Showdown

An alleged burglary attempt turned into a backwoods drama in Silver Springs when a man searching for someone named “McKenzie” ended up tangling with deputies, according to the Marion County Sheriff’s Office.

Deputies responded to a call at 1350 SE 173rd Ct. on January 15, 2025, after homeowner Frank Bellezza reported hearing glass breaking, followed by his dogs barking. Grabbing his .44-caliber black powder revolver, Bellezza found his living room window shattered and a man—later identified as 35-year-old Matthew Downs—running down the road.

Bellezza said he confronted Downs, telling him to stay off the property. Downs allegedly responded by yelling, “I got something for you, hillbilly!” while holding a black object. Fearing for his safety, Bellezza fired a single shot in Downs’ direction, missing him. Downs then fled into the woods.

Meanwhile, Bellezza’s brother Angelo, who had been playing video games in a shed, reported hearing someone yelling the name “McKenzie.” Stepping outside, Angelo encountered Downs just feet away, shouting accusations about McKenzie’s whereabouts. Angelo said the situation escalated when his brother intervened, leading to Downs’ dramatic retreat.

Deputies tracked Downs to a nearby shed, where he allegedly resisted arrest with vigor. Downs reportedly fled after an initial attempt to detain him, but Deputy Paddock tackled him a short distance away. Even then, Downs allegedly refused to cooperate, leading to a scuffle in which he tried to grab a deputy’s stun gun and kicked another deputy in the leg. A taser finally subdued him.

Downs, who denied breaking the window but admitted being at the property to “find his daughter,” was evaluated at a local hospital before being booked into the Marion County Jail. He faces charges of criminal mischief and resisting arrest with violence.

As for McKenzie? She remains a mystery.
