A Sweet Second Chance: Ms. Steve’s Ice Cream Survives

By Bryce Abshier

Imagine a small town where memories are etched in the walls of an unassuming pink building. It is a building that has, for decades, served as the backdrop to laughter, conversation, and the occasional cold treat on a warm afternoon. Ms. Steve’s Ice Cream, a place where time seems to stand still, where a soft-serve of vanilla could erase the weight of the world, was poised to close its doors for good.

Residents of South Marion County had braced themselves for this finality of its closing, feeling the unmistakable sting of loss. After all, some things just don’t seem to survive the passing of time.

However, the community’s concerns were quickly alleviated when Emanuel Colon of Summerfield stepped forward as the new owner. Colon, who has ties to the area, plans to reopen the beloved shop in the coming days, ensuring that the sweet tradition continues in Belleview.

Colon shared that his decision to acquire Ms. Steve’s was deeply personal. “This is a tribute to my son,” he explained. His son, who tragically passed away at the age of 17 after a battle with cancer, had a dream of one day owning an ice cream shop. When this opportunity became available, Colon saw it as a sign. Colon hopes to honor his son’s memory by keeping the shop’s legacy alive and offering support to the community.

Colon’s promise to the community is simple: he will breathe new life into Ms. Steve’s, a place that once held the memories of generations past, and now will carry the weight of a legacy. The ice cream will flow once more, and the iconic pink walls will stand proud.

Yet, there’s more to this story than just ice cream and nostalgia. Colon speaks of giving back, of taking the reins of this local institution not just to honor his son, but to offer something to the people who made it all possible. What exactly this will look like, no one yet knows. For now, the focus is on reviving the shop and ensuring its place in Belleview’s community for years to come.

For residents who had feared losing this local gem, the news of its revival is nothing short of a victory.
