Move over, Horse Fever. Belleview is hatching its own artistic legacy—one bird at a time.
In a whimsical yet meaningful flight of civic imagination, Belleview officials are inviting locals to weigh in on a pressing matter of avian importance: should the city’s first-ever public art sculpture take the form of a wise old owl or a flashy red cardinal?
It’s the latest chapter in Belleview’s growing love affair with public art—and this time, the inspiration takes wing from the city’s proud status as a designated bird sanctuary, a title held since 1960.
“This isn’t just about putting up a statue—it’s about telling our story,” said City Administrator Mariah Moody. “Public art builds community pride and reflects who we are. We want our residents to help shape that story.”
The statue will be the city’s first major 3D public art installation, funded through the Community Redevelopment Area (CRA) and open to added support from sponsors, donors, and maybe even a few local bird lovers with deep pockets. Think Ocala’s Horse Fever—but feathered.
“This is about creating something that’s authentic to Belleview,” said City Clerk Lezli Merritt, who originally pitched the concept. “We’ve got deep roots as a bird sanctuary, and this sculpture will be a meaningful and artistic way to celebrate that.”
Residents and business owners are encouraged to vote for their favorite feathered contender by completing a short form at www.belleviewfl.org/statues. The winning bird will then be professionally sculpted and submitted to the Belleview City Commission for final approval.
Until then, it’s anyone’s guess who will rule the roost. Will Belleview go brainy with the owl? Or bold with the cardinal?
