Fake Detectives, Real Charges: Deputies Arrest Pair for Impersonating Cops

What started as a routine stop at the bank turned into a real-life scam straight out of a crime show for one Marion County resident.

According to the Marion County Sheriff’s Office, Property Crimes detectives arrested Colby Thompson and Autumn Cashman on Thursday after investigators say the pair posed as undercover law enforcement officers and used the ruse to steal a victim’s wallet, phone, and bank information.

Both suspects were charged with impersonating a law enforcement officer, burglary of an occupied conveyance, and grand theft. Thompson was also charged with fraudulent use of credit cards and criminal use of personal identification information.

The case began on December 28, 2025, when a victim contacted deputies to report a bizarre encounter near the Regions Bank on North Highway 314A. The victim said Thompson and Cashman approached him and claimed they were undercover detectives.

Thompson allegedly shined a flashlight directly into the victim’s face and began questioning him. While the victim was distracted, Cashman reportedly slipped around to the passenger side of the vehicle and removed his wallet. Thompson also took the victim’s cellphone and later called the victim’s wife, once again claiming to be law enforcement.

By the end of the day, the victim noticed something was very wrong with his bank account.

Unauthorized charges appeared at Walmart, Forest Fire vape shop, Dairy Queen, Marathon Gas, and even an online purchase through Priority Tire.

Detectives reviewed surveillance footage from Walmart and Dairy Queen, where deputies say the pair were clearly seen using the victim’s bank card.

After building the case, detectives obtained arrest warrants for both suspects.

On January 22, 2026, Thompson and Cashman were located at their residence, arrested, and transported to the Marion County Jail. Both are currently being held without bond.
