A historic commercial building in Weirsdale sustained heavy damage Sunday morning after a three-alarm fire tore through the structure, drawing firefighters from across southern Marion County.
Marion County Fire Rescue responded at 4:02 a.m. on July 19 to the 16600 block of S. Highway 25 after multiple 911 callers reported a large factory building engulfed in flames.
Engine 27 arrived just three minutes later to find the approximately 25,000-square-foot, two-story building with roughly half of the structure already involved and flames shooting through the roof.
Firefighters initially launched an aggressive interior attack, but worsening conditions—including a structural collapse, downed power lines, and rapidly changing fire behavior—forced crews to shift their focus to protecting nearby homes, neighboring businesses, and surrounding wooded areas.Additional resources were requested, escalating the incident to a third alarm.
Departments assisting Marion County Fire Rescue included South Marion Station 6, The Villages Station 10, Shady Station 16, Silver Springs Shores Station 17, Belleview Station 18, Rolling Greens Station 28, Spruce Creek Station 30, Friendship Station 21, and The Villages Fire Department.Firefighters worked for more than an hour before bringing the blaze under control at 5:04 a.m. Crews remained on scene Sunday morning extinguishing hot spots and conducting overhaul operations.
Despite the intensity of the fire, no civilian or firefighter injuries were reported.
The cause and origin of the fire remain under investigation.
The building, long recognized as one of Weirsdale’s historic commercial landmarks, suffered extensive damage in the blaze.
