The schoolhouse shuffle could soon be coming to Belleview, and local parents are being invited to weigh in before the district starts redrawing the lines.
Marion County Public Schools is considering changes to elementary school attendance boundaries as plans move forward to construct a replacement school on the existing Belleview Elementary campus.
The potential rezoning could affect six schools across the Belleview area: Belleview Elementary, Belleview-Santos Elementary, Legacy Elementary, Harbour View Elementary, Shady Hill Elementary and Winding Oaks Elementary.
In other words, some families could eventually find themselves assigned to a different elementary school, depending on where those new boundary lines fall.
However, district officials have not announced any final changes, and the proposal remains in the public input stage.
The district has released a map showing existing attendance boundaries for the six schools, along with dots representing households with elementary-age students currently zoned for those schools. Before any potential changes move forward, school officials are giving residents an opportunity to make their voices heard.
Two community input meetings are scheduled for Monday, October 19.The first will take place from 9 to 10 a.m. at the Belleview Community Center, located at 5615 SE 110th Place.
A second meeting is scheduled for 6 to 7 p.m. at Belleview Elementary School, located at 5556 Highway 484.
Both meetings will focus on the potential rezoning of Belleview-area elementary schools, allowing parents and other community members to provide input on the proposed changes.
Residents who cannot attend either meeting can also submit their feedback through an online form provided by the school district.
For now, the district is gathering opinions rather than handing out new school assignments. But for families with young students, the discussion could eventually determine which school their children call home.
