‘Need for Speed’ Lands Local Man in Jail After High-Speed Chase

Speed Racer’s Tire Troubles Lead to Jail Time: Local Man’s High-Speed Hijinks Land Him in Hot Water

In what could have been a pit stop gone wrong, 29-year-old Xavier Melendez turned SE Maricamp Road into his personal raceway on August 21, 2024. The Marion County Sheriff’s Office reports that Melendez was spotted barreling westbound in a gray SUV, blowing through a red light at Emerald Road like it was his job. When deputies attempted to pull him over, Melendez zigzagged through traffic, ignoring the flashing lights and sirens as if they were merely a suggestion.

His high-speed antics came to an abrupt halt when he swerved into a Marathon gas station. But instead of gassing up, Melendez bolted out of the vehicle and made a run for it, sprinting behind the station in a desperate bid to escape. While Deputy K. Gonzalez had eyes on him, Melendez dashed toward a nearby shopping plaza, where his race was finally over.

When finally caught, Melendez had an interesting explanation: He wasn’t fleeing from the law; he was just trying to get to the tire shop to talk about new wheels. Oh, and as for the wild driving? According to Melendez, “that’s the only way I knows how to.”

A search of the SUV turned up more than just questionable driving habits. Deputies discovered a plastic pipe with burnt green residue in the cup holder, which tested positive for THC. Melendez was promptly arrested and taken to the Marion County Jail, where he’s facing charges of fleeing and eluding law enforcement, resisting without violence, and possession of drug paraphernalia.

This pit stop didn’t end with new tires but with a one-way ticket to a jail cell, proving that some habits are better left in the rearview mirror.
