A Sunday night blaze in the 3600 block of SE 12th Place gave Ocala Fire Rescue a fiery workout but ended with a resounding victory for the first responders.
The call came in at 10:39 p.m. on January 27, and within moments, crews arrived to find a single-story home with smoke and flames spilling from the back porch. Firefighters wasted no time, dousing the patio inferno before tackling the flames that had sneaked into the attic through the soffit.
To access the fire hiding in the attic, firefighters pulled down the ceiling in the main living area. Once exposed, the flames met their match and were swiftly extinguished.
The operation was a team effort, with multiple units answering the call. Engine 2 knocked down the fire, Ladder 3 and Tower 1 pulled a second line, and Engine 5 ensured the water supply kept flowing while assisting with the ceiling work.
Thankfully, no injuries were reported, but the home’s occupants have a new appreciation for the importance of fire safety. The cause of the blaze remains under investigation.
Ocala Fire Rescue teamed up with the Fire Prevention Division, Ocala Police Department, Ocala Electric Utility, and Marion County Fire Rescue to handle the incident.
Residents are reminded to practice fire safety and ensure working smoke detectors are installed throughout their homes. Need a smoke detector? Ocala Fire Rescue offers free alarms and installation – visit ocalafire.org/smokealarms to request yours.
Because when it comes to fire safety, an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of water.
