Weirsdale Woman Kicks in Door, Steals Guns ‘for Safety’
Deputies arrested a Weirsdale woman on Thursday after she allegedly broke into her roommate’s locked bedroom, stole several firearms, and handed them over to law enforcement—claiming she was doing everyone a favor.
According to the Marion County Sheriff’s Office, Kayla Butler was taken into custody on charges of armed burglary and grand theft of a firearm. Deputies responded to a home on SE 134th Terrace after Butler called to report that her roommate had threatened her. While speaking with deputies, Butler reportedly grabbed a black bag, declared it contained firearms, and asked them to take it.
When questioned, Butler admitted the bag and gun came from the victim’s room. Deputies noticed his bedroom door had visible damage, including a busted doorknob and a removed padlock. Security footage from inside the room allegedly captured Butler kicking in the door, muttering an expletive about the victim, and turning off the camera.
Inside the bag, deputies found a collection of weapons, including a BB gun, an antique black powder gun, a Taurus Judge handgun, and assorted ammunition. Butler claimed she took the firearms because the victim had made concerning statements about law enforcement. She also admitted using a drill to access the room but initially denied tampering with the camera—until deputies confronted her with the footage.
Butler was arrested and booked into the Marion County Jail without further incident.
