The Voice has received a steady stream of letters expressing frustration over development sweeping through Marion County. Longtime residents, once drawn to the area for its open spaces, rural charm, and agricultural roots, are increasingly concerned that those very qualities are vanishing. The construction boom has triggered a wave of community backlash. Concerns range from environmental impact and wildlife displacement to overburdened infrastructure and a perceived disregard for Marion’s equestrian heritage and rural identity. The following letters reflect the voices of residents who feel their way of life is being paved over in the name of unchecked growth:
Stop the Building
STOP the Building!!! This growth is getting ridiculous. Our roads are not equipped to handle this large influx of people.

Too Much Destruction
I grew up in Clearwater, Florida. Back when it was a quiet little beach town. Early in my marriage I moved to Orlando before Disney. As Orlando grew we bought a small farm in Sorrento where I started raising and showing a few horses in Lake and Marion Counties, BEFORE The Villages! In 1988 I moved to Ocala. Marion County was like a piece of heaven. A small town, agriculturally based. People called it affectionately SLOCALA! It remained pretty much that way and all the residents loved it under greedy billionaire developers with the help of greedy politicians realized they could profit from selling it off to any developer who are along regardless of the unreversable damage!
I’m not so naive as to not realize there is always going to be growth, change and so called “progress” but there has been way too much destruction with no concern for the environment, our wildlife, our water, our infrastructure, our agricultural needs, our history as horse capitol or the wants of the residents!
