A routine speeding citation inside Stonecrest allegedly turned into a neighborhood chase and a trip to Walmart before ending in an arrest.
According to the Marion County Sheriff’s Office, Deputy Travis Cetin was working a traffic enforcement detail in Stonecrest on June 5 when he clocked a white Honda CR-V traveling about 40 mph in a 25 mph zone along Southeast 111th Terrace.
After conducting a traffic stop and issuing a citation, the deputy reported that the driver, identified as 67-year-old Karlene Moncrieffe Boyer of Summerfield, accelerated away as soon as the citation was handed over.
Investigators said Boyer was later spotted driving through the area and allegedly accelerated to about 40 mph in a 20 mph zone while weaving around pedestrians and a parked vehicle on a curving residential road. The affidavit states several pedestrians appeared startled, with one man reportedly throwing his hands in the air as the vehicle passed.
Deputies said Boyer ignored emergency lights and sirens, rolled through another stop sign, and briefly stopped near a roundabout on Southeast 171st Loop. When ordered to exit the vehicle, she allegedly told the deputy she was not getting out and drove away again.
Rather than pursue through the residential neighborhood, deputies broadcast the information to other units.
The search did not last long.
A deputy working an unrelated call at the Walmart Supercenter on U.S. Highway 441 in Summerfield reportedly recognized Boyer walking into the store and attempted to take her into custody. Authorities said she resisted arrest and had to be physically restrained with assistance from additional deputies.
Deputies further reported that Boyer refused commands, resisted being placed in a patrol vehicle, and later had to be evaluated by Marion County Fire Rescue before being transported to the Marion County Jail.
Boyer was charged with felony fleeing and eluding a law enforcement officer with lights and sirens activated, resisting an officer without violence, and reckless driving.
What began as a speeding stop in Stonecrest ultimately ended a few miles away in one of Summerfield’s busiest parking lots.
