A 77-year-old Ocala woman was killed Saturday afternoon in a three-vehicle incident that Florida Highway Patrol troopers say involved two vehicles traveling recklessly at high speeds.
The crash occurred around noon Aug. 8 at the intersection of Southwest 49th Avenue Road and Southwest 82nd Place Road in Marion County.
According to an FHP press release, two sedans were traveling northbound on Southwest 49th Avenue Road at a high rate of speed and driving recklessly when an SUV attempted to enter the roadway from Southwest 82nd Place Road.
One of the sedans, driven by a 28-year-old Ocala man, collided with the left side of the SUV. The second sedan continued northbound and fled the scene, according to FHP.
The SUV was driven by a 48-year-old Ocala man who suffered minor injuries. His passengers, a 78-year-old Ocala man and a 77-year-old Ocala woman, were taken to a hospital. The 78-year-old man suffered serious injuries, while the woman was pronounced dead. All three occupants were wearing seatbelts.
The 28-year-old driver of the sedan was not injured. FHP said charges against him are pending.
Troopers are still working to identify and locate the driver of the second sedan that allegedly fled northbound following the crash.
