Food Stamps and Felonies: Family Feud Ends in Jail

Family Feud Turns Felonious: Marion County Woman Arrested After Struggle Over Food Stamp Card, Hidden Contraband in Jail

A family dispute over a food stamp card escalated into a full-blown criminal saga in Marion County, culminating in the arrest of a local woman on multiple charges, including domestic battery by strangulation and sneaking drug paraphernalia into jail.

Authorities say Desiree Britt, 32, attempted to take her mother’s food stamp card by force on January 30. When her mother, Tonya Williams, refused to hand it over, Britt allegedly took things up a notch—literally—by trying to lift her mother off the ground and pry her arms apart. When that failed, she reportedly went for the chokehold.

Williams managed to escape and call for help, prompting her sister, Linda Weaver, to intervene. But things didn’t cool down from there—Britt allegedly shoved Weaver into a porch railing, adding another charge to her growing list.

When deputies arrived, Britt denied any physical altercation, though her version of events shifted under questioning. She was taken into custody and transported to the Marion County Jail.

That’s when things took an even darker turn.

During a routine search at the jail, detention deputies discovered multiple syringes hidden inside Britt’s body. When questioned, Britt admitted she used them for methamphetamine, explaining that she stashed them internally to prevent her daughter from finding them. A field test confirmed meth residue inside the syringes, leading to additional charges of introducing contraband into a jail facility and possession of drug paraphernalia.

Britt remains behind bars, facing multiple felony and misdemeanor charges stemming from a confrontation that began over a government-issued grocery card and ended with a trip to jail in more ways than one.
