Stormy Night Turns Fiery After Lightning Hits Summerfield Home

A Summerfield homeowner got an unwelcome jolt during Friday night’s storms when a reported lightning strike sparked a fire inside the attic of a home.

Marion County Fire Rescue was called to the 14000 block of SE 97th Terrace at 8 p.m. Friday after the homeowner reported lightning had struck the residence and smoke was coming from inside.

Crews from Spruce Creek Station #30 arrived just four minutes later and found heavy smoke throughout the attic, with flames burning in the home’s roof trusses.

Firefighters entered the residence and conducted a primary search, finding no one inside. Crews then turned their attention overhead and began attacking the attic fire.

With a fire tucked into the roof structure, additional help was brought in from The Villages Station #10, Shady Station #16, Belleview Station #18 and Weirsdale Station #27.

Firefighters had the blaze under control by 8:28 p.m., less than half an hour after the initial call. Crews remained at the home afterward performing overhaul operations, checking the structure and making sure the fire was completely extinguished.

Despite the lightning strike, smoke and attic fire, the incident ended without any reported injuries.

No civilians or firefighters were injured, according to Marion County Fire Rescue.
